This Honeywell 70E-L00-C122XE Dolphin 70e Black enterprise hybrid device capability is a handheld, pocket-sized mobile device that wirelessly scans and decodes standard 1D and 2D barcodes while providing additional personal computer features such as a calendar, email, phone capability, and music player. The two-fingered touchscreen is made of durable glass and is optically bonded for enhanced screen view in sunlight. The keypad has four programmable buttons, a scan key that activates the barcode reader window, volume up/down buttons, and a key that brings a virtual keypad onto the screen for typing. The 5.0 megapixel video/camera with flash automatically focuses for a clear picture. The device has speakers and a microphone with noise cancellation. The device operates on the Android 4.0 operating system. The battery has an extended life compared to the standard Dolphin 70e battery and charges through the included USB cable by plugging into the included power adapter or a host system (not included). The same USB cable can be used to transmit data between the device and the host system.

Barcode scanners, also known as barcode readers, can be used to scan and decode barcodes and to transmit barcode data to a computer or another host system. Barcode readers with a single-line laser can be used to scan linear, one-dimensional (1D) barcodes. Some lasers can produce light in an omnidirectional pattern to allow scanning of barcodes from different angles. Other barcode readers contain CCD (charge-coupled device) light sensors instead of a laser for accuracy and wear resistance. Barcode scanners with raster scanning, area imaging, and other scanning technologies can allow scanning of two-dimensional (2D) or Portable Document Format 417 (PDF417) barcodes, among other types. Some barcode readers provide onboard flash memory to allow the storage of barcode data before transmitting it to a computer or host system through a USB cable or wireless WLAN or Bluetooth connection. Many barcode readers have a handle for handheld use and come with a stand or a charging cradle for fixed position applications, while others are designed for stationary use on a counter or another flat surface. Some portable readers are small enough to be carried in a pocket or attached to a lanyard. Barcode readers are used at retail checkout counters and other points of sale (POS) locations and in warehouses and shipping facilities.

Along with the aesthetic details, the Dolphin 70e was also built to deliver years of reliable operation. Incorporating Corning Gorilla Glass, the device's touch screen is exceptionally resistant to damage. The IP54*- rated housing protects against dust and water immersion and for added versatility, the Dolphin 70e can be operated in extreme temperatures as low as -20 deg C (-4 degF) minimising downtime associated with conditions.

Honeywell's press release called the Dolphin 70e a "rugged enterprise hybrid device," and there's definitely some merging and cooperation of different designs and technologies going on. While the design is eye-catching, its ruggedness mandate means it's a cross between a traditional Pocket PC and a modern smartphone. On the OS side there are compromises as well. You can get the 70e with either Windows Embedded Handheld 6.5 (think Windows Mobile 6.5) or with Android 4.0. That'sbecause while Windows Mobile no longer has any presence in modern smartphones, it remains by far the most common OS in vertical and industrial markets. So continuing to make it available is probably a smart move.

With hundreds of millions of sleek, elegant, high-tech smartphones out there, Honeywell saw great potential for a more durable more rugged version of those devices, one that in Honeywell's words "marries the size, style and usability of a consumer device with the reliability and longevity of a traditional rugged handheld." The result is the Dolphin 70e Black, introduced October 2012.
